Daniel McCready, Colleyville Heritage High School head wrestling coach, will be inducted into the Texas Wrestling Hall of Honor for Coaches on Saturday, February 17, at the UIL Wrestling State Tournament in Houston. Presented by the Texas High School Wrestling Coaches Association, the honor is to recognize coaches for their leadership and contributions.
“This is a tremendous honor to be voted in by many of my mentors in the sport,” McCready stated, adding that he tried to downplay his reaction when he heard the news because “we had the district wrestling tournament for middle schools that day and I wanted to keep the attention on the kids.”
McCready also coaches wrestling at Colleyville Middle School (CMS). At CHHS, he also serves as the assistant tennis coach and teaches U.S. history.
A wrestler at the high school and collegiate level, most of McCready’s competition career was spent in Iowa. In high school, his many honors included being the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Champion. He went on to wrestle at Wartburg College in Iowa, where he was a member of the 2003 and 2004 national championship teams. The 2003 team was inducted into the Glen Brand National Hall of Fame in 2016.
In 2007, he moved to Texas to begin his teaching and coaching career. He has been a head wrestling coach since 2010 and coached at Northwest High School and Lebanon Trail High School before joining CHHS in 2020.
His career record as head coach includes 432 dual meet wins, two team district championships, 67 individual district champions and 17 individual regional champions. McCready has coached many wrestlers who have achieved top honors at state: 70 qualifiers, 19 top six winners, three runners up and five individual champions. At CMS, he has coached 24 state qualifiers, 12 of whom placed in the top six, including a state champion.
McCready has been honored as the District Coach of the Year in 2011, 2017, and 2018. In 2018, he was named the Region 2-5A Girls Coach of the Year and the Texas High School Wrestling Coach of the Year.
In addition to coaching, McCready’s numerous leadership positions include serving with the Texas North Region USA Wrestling, USA Wrestling Texas State Tournament and Middle School State Tournament. He is one of 14 USA Wrestling silver level-certified coaches in Texas and is working on his gold certification.
Congratulations to Coach McCready!
